Trail Runner Magazine 2011 Gear Guide - SynMat UL 7 mat

The SynMat UL 7 mat is reviewed in the Trail Runner Magazine Gear Guide. Here's what they have to say:

Featuring micro-fiber insulation laminated to the inside top and bottom of the mat, the UL 7 is 2.8 inches thick and 64 inches long and boasts a R-value of 3.1, which means it is both cushy and warm. Testers lauded the comfortable top fabric and found the pad resisted puncturing when sleeping on rough, sharp-stick-strewn ground. Separate low-profile inflation and deflation valves expedited both chores.

Always great to have our products reviewed by excellent magazines like Trail Runner, but here are a couple of things to consider:

The UL mats are very lightweight and one of the trade-offs when light fabrics are used is durability. Now, the UL mats do a good job of balancing weight reduction and durability, but we don't recommend putting them down on sharp objects. It's always best to clear the area you will be sleeping on before putting your mat down.

Also, the weight quoted in this write-up lists the weight at 14.5 ounces for a size S. The actual average weight of the SynMat UL 7 S is 430g/15.2 oz.

But let's not get tangled up in the weeds. The use of SynMat UL 7 on overnight trail runs is exactly the kind of thing we had in mind when we designed it. We've always believed that a well designed sleeping mat can allow us all to have our cake and eat it as well: light weight, compact, comfortable, warm and durable. This mat takes the cake having/eating to the far reaches of what is possible.

Run lightly and carry a fat mat!
