During the shoulder season (and every other season, really) we are reminded of the great value of bringing a tarp - sometimes even for that relaxed day trip. It's one of the fastest ways to make friends when it starts raining. At about 28 ounces, the Exped Scout Tarp Extreme, for example, can turn an otherwise inhospitable, lonely, and cramped morning (everyone in their own tents cooking in vestibules) into a surprisingly lively affair. This is, perhaps, one of the great secrets to comfortable camping.
